Knowing where to buy leather will make any leather working project much easier. The best places are often online. They offer large variety, fair prices, and fast shipping. Local stores can be excellent too. You can see the leather in person, and purchase the exact piece that you hold in your hand.
Leather deals are periodically available at most any leather retailer. Some opportunities include overstock, scraps, and blemished pieces. Sometimes they will sell smaller pieces by weight (pound). Other times they might have leathers in specific colors or finishes they are looking to sell at lower prices.
Leather for crafts can be purchased at local craft shops, or via online leather retailers. Choice will initially depend on the use for the leather. Basic crafts made for fun might benefit from lower cost leathers if price is a consideration. Finer leather pieces that will be used daily might benefit from higher-quality leather that will last a long time.
You also might live near tanneries, or local leather processors that could have hides available to purchase. Also, other leather worker friends might live nearby and be open to selling or trading leather.
Large leathers pieces are usually shipped rolled in tubes or boxes. This is efficient and easy. Smaller pieces or scraps are often packed securely in boxes. The key is that the hides surface arrives safely after being in transit. Scratched surfaces might make some leathers unusable for their intended purpose, so proper packing is a must.
Usually, limiting the ability for the leather to shift helps prevent scratching and abrasion to the surfaces. Also, covering the surfaces with a protective material or paper also helps limit the potential for scratching or rubbing to occur. All the time, though, leather packed well ships and arrives securely and in great shape.
Generally available at most leather retailers, these are a relatively inexpensive and great way to really get a feel for the different weights. One can feel, bend, and see which leather thickness might work best for their next project.
Leather strips can often be purchased from retailers that sell leather hides and pieces. A few popular locations include Springfield Leather (click here to visit their site), Tandy (click here to visit their site), and Zack White (click here to visit their site).
The cheapest leather is often remnant or scrap vegetable tanned leather. They can sometimes be found for a few dollars. They are also real leather than can be tooled and worked into a finished piece. Faux and vinyl leathers are far less expensive, though are just plastic, and not real leather.
I've typically just bought from the shop in town. But at the rate I go through leather it's adding up and got me thinking that I should consider other options, everything else I use I tend to buy wholesale and this got me going down the rabbit hole of the internet trying to find a Canadian tannery or wholesale option. I've had no luck with this with the exception of a couple guys that tan leather out of deer hides or I might find a supplier that's little cheaper but then the shipping costs within Canada make it not worth it. Right now I'm using around 6-8oz latigo leather for strapping on backpacks and paying around $15CAD a sqf which seems to be the going rate in Canada for retail Has anyone found a good online supplier, tannery or wholesale in Canada Similar to Hide House or anything like that There are quite a few options in the US but as other Canadians know it's the shipping and duties that kill that option and make it too pricey. Curious if anyone has found anything in Canada Or if you're Canadian and buy from the US what's your experience like and who have you used
I get my leather and a lot of supplies from Weaver in Ohio.I get some things from Tandy in Canada but have not been happy with their leather for quite some time.Weavers is usually pretty quick and have never ,had any issues with the leather that they sent.I do not know of any other suppliers in Canada.
I have to believe there's more than one leather store in Vancouver but are you referring to Lonsdale Leather when your say, \"the shop in town\" I don't really see them as a big latigo supplier but I've used several veg tan double shoulders that were OK. Not great but OK.
You have Tandy in Surrey. As Sheiliajeanne notes, there's a lot to be said for being able to pick your own leather or, depending on the quality on any given day, picking not to pick any leather. It's disappointing to walk out of a shop without the leather you went in for but not nearly as disappointing as opening a package of second grade leather you paid a premium price for on the 'net.. It's worth checking the Tandy Canada website periodically to see what's on sale. I imagine there are a lot of opinions about the quality of leather from Tandy. I find that sometimes the quality is there, sometimes it's not. This, of course, makes it very difficult to plan any kind of production.

\"Used the leather cleaner and the conditioner in both of our cars with leather seats and they look so good!! No overpowering fumes either! I am very sensitive to scents and this didn't bother me at all. Highly recommended.\"
I had bought a decant a while back and it was excellent in longevity and projection. The smell itself is great, however the performance did not work for me. I am not sure why perfumers do that but at almost 300 dollars this should not be an issue. I had to return it and pay the restocking fee unfortunately. It was an original bottle, so no issues with perfume online. But this batch was a flop.
